The marriage of smartphone technology with the biosensor technology is truly a departure from the conventional sensing approaches and devices, offering portable health care diagnostics and environmental monitoring outside well-resourced laboratories. Smartphone-based biosensors are more accessible as well as cheaper than traditional analytical devices, leading to provide cost-efficient, real-time, and point-of-care sensing especially for clinical samples in resource-limited settings. Herein, we provide a comprehensive account about the applications of smartphone to serve as a portable sensing device for the real-time monitoring and on-site analysis of different environmental as well as biological analytes such as pharmaceutical drugs, metal ions, viruses, enzymes, sugars, and volatile organic compounds. In addition, the tremendous applications of smartphone as a point-of-care device in cardiology and monitoring cardiovascular diseases in remote areas as well as the limitations of the existing devices have also been addressed in detail. To conclude, smartphone-based biosensing technology truly revolutionize the detection systems and showed promising potential as well as unexpected opportunities for expanding point-of-care diagnostics and prognostic tools, leading to change the concept of mobile health and reshape the entire biosensor market.
