Fa ctors illfluencing Ihe occurrencr oj Hydrogen Induced Crackillg (HIC) in sleel plates Jor lillepipe use have been illvestigated by mealls oj ultrasonic C-scanning oj plate specimens preliminarily immersed into sYllthetic .lenwa ter saturated with H ,S.The cracks were most Jrequently observed in the area corresponding to A-and V-segregates oj mother ingots , illitiating at elongated MnS illclusions {m d propagatillg along anomalous structure in which Mn alld P WfTe segregated.Th e rest area was rather insu.<ceptible to HIC.The occurrellce oj HIC in the Jormer area was slightly decreased but cOllld not be prevented even by decreasing average S content oj the I)lates as low as O.OOlwt % .The addition oj copt)er markedly reduced the rate oj hy drogell permeation, bllt hardly prevented the Jormatioll oj H IC. Hea t treatments to imlJTove Ihe solute segregation ill slabs or to make the structure ill plates homogelleous helped decreasing the susceptibility to HIC.The treatments , however, were impracticable Jor commercia l cOlltrol-rolied plates. All e./fective meallS to overcome these difficulties has beell Jound 10 strictly cOlltroliillg the ratio oj e/fective cerium or calcium to suljilr ill the melt (alomic ratio ~ 1 •. 1) alld preven ting the reoxidation 0/ Ihe two elements d,/Tillg Ihe teemillg oj the melt.Resulting I)lales which Jl/bjecled to COII-Irolled roliing hfl ve been highlv re.<istanl or lolall y in.
