Skilled attendance at delivery in Bangladesh: a strategy development tool

SAFE study aimed to provide new knowledge on the identification, implementation and \nevaluation of effective, affordable and equitable strategies to increase Skilled Attendance \nat delivery in developing countries. It was a multi country research and five countries \n.. \nincluding Bangladesh were involved in this study. The main purpose of SAFE study was \nto develop a Strategy Development Tool (SDT), which would enable the policy makers \nand programme planners to systematically gather and interpret information on skilled \nattendance at delivery. The SDT contained five components, which revealed the \ncollection, analysis and synthesis of existing and new data on skilled attendance. The \nfive modules were: problem identification, situation analysis, needs assessment, quality \nof clinical care and synthesis. The cost of the application of the SDT was also examined \nduring SAFE study as part of the field test to consider the affordability. \nIn Bangladesh under SAFE study using the SDT, certain strategy options to promote \nskilled attendance at delivery were developed. The key findings in SAFE study and the \nstrategy options are given in the following. \nA review of existing literature showed that in Bangladesh only 7% of deliveries were \nassisted by qualified medical practitioners, while 22% by relatives and almost half by \ntraditional birth attendants (TBAs).
