Comblainite occurs at Shinkolobwe, uranium deposit from Shaba, Zaïre. Turquoise blue cryptocrystalline crusts. Refractive indices : n'g = 1.690 and n'p = 1.684 with low birefringency. CO₂, H₂O and OH⁻ investigated by infrared spectrometry and thermogravimetry, Co and Ni by microprobe analysis, valence states of Ni and Co by ESCA. Chemical formula : (Ni²⁺[x], Co³⁺[1-x])(OH)₂(CO₃)[(1-x)/2] • yH₂O, with x near 2/3. Rhombohedral with a = 7.796 Å and a = 22.47°. Cell volume : 60.7 ų. Strongest powder diffraction lines (d, I, hkl) : 7.64 Å (100) 003, 2.567 Å (70) 012 and 3.808 Å (50) 006. Structural group of pyroaurite and close similarity with takovite from Takovo (Serbia). Named after G. Comblain, mineralogist-technician (Musée royal de l'Afrique centrale, Tervuren).
