In this chapter, the authors explore the intersections of metal powders and additive manufacturing (AM) and identify future directions and challenges. First, they describe the goal and organization of the book and provide insights gleaned from each preceding chapter, followed by a discussion of challenges and promising opportunities that converge in this dynamic realm. The authors present a comprehensive survey of the historical evolution and contemporary advancements in the production of metallic powders for AM, alongside an examination of the influence of powder chemistry and characteristics on AM processes and final component performance. They summarize future directions in the AM landscape, charting a course for the evolution of metallic component fabrication. As applied to AM, ongoing and future developments in AI hold great potential for revolutionizing the industry.
