Designing and Comparison of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Reluctance Motors and Conventional Motors in Electric Vehicles

Application of Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (IPMSM) has been increasingly popular in Electric Vehicles (EV) area due to its inherent merits such as high torque density, excellent efficiency and superior controllability. This paper mainly performs a design and comparative study of inverted triangle structure with Dual-U-Shaped of two kinds of different rotor. The magnetic field, inductances, mechanical characteristics, external characteristics and short circuit fault performances of the two motors have been compared in details. Finally, cogging torque, efficiency, power factor of the two motors have been compared by experimental results. The most impressive finding is that Dual-U shape has excellent torque performance, and superior controllability performance.
