PHYSIOLOGICAL STUDIES OF GERMINATION IN THE GENUS AVENA

Summary Changes in fats, sugars and starch have been followed in grains of A. sativa during the first few days in germination conditions. A decrease in fats and some of the sugars present in the dry grain was evident during the first day; the utilization of starch did not commence until between the first and second days. It is concluded that the metabolism of the germinating grain is not initially dependent on starch‐derived materials. Fats and some of the sugars are suggested as likely alternatives for respiratory substrates. The relevance of this to previous studies on the development of starch‐degrading enzymes in germinating and dormant grains of Avena spp. is discussed.
