The current understanding of carbon flow through soil microbial food webs is still considered largely a ’black box‘. In this thesis, soil bacteria actually involved in the turnover of distinct plant-derived substrates were identified and quantified. I show that rhizosphere and detritus substrates were degraded by distinct bacterial taxa with characteristic distribution patterns in the field. Besides, specific bacteria were selectively mobilised by seepage water. I conclude that each carbon pool in soils is transformed by specific bacterial populations with different dynamics in space and time.
