A new approach to noninvasive continuous blood pressure (NCBP) estimation is intensively studied in this paper. Traditionally, pulse arrival time (PAT) contains the pre-ejection period (PEP) and is prone to smooth muscle (SM) contraction. Besides, the implementation of electrocardiogram (ECG) requires many measurement sites, which is inconvenient and obtrusive. In this paper, peripheral pulse transit time (PPTT) is proposed for NCBP estimation. At peripheral, two factors have dramatic impact on BP estimation: the viscosity of arterial wall and the reflection of pulse wave. Peak delay (PD) between two different pulse waves and heart rate (HR) are employed to compensate these influences. Then we describe how to estimate NCBP with the aid of PPTT. The experimental results of 16 subjects show the correlation between PPTT and SBP/DBP is 0.728/0.520. Moreover, the standard derivation (SD) of the difference between SBP/DBP estimation and measurement value of sphygmomanometer is 6.71/4.54mmHg. The proposed method is promising in portable and wearable NCBP measurement device.
