This chapter studies the operation of the land market to reveal the competition for transfer rights of rural land and the unequal distribution of land sale proceeds between the government and rural residents. It describes the new apparatuses and discourses adopted by the government for coping with land conflicts, rural residents’ strategies for resisting the government’s land grabs, the ambivalent role played by village cadres in compulsory land requisition and land development, and the major policy adjustments brought about by the rural populace’s resistance over the past decades.
