In competitive collaboration, collaboration is used as a means to win over competition. Collaborative competition is the most effective way of competing. It is valuable for foreign companies entering the Chinese market to be aware of the potential opportunities in collaborating with private Chinese enterprises, as well as the potential pitfalls. Although authorities have liberalized and opened up the Chinese markets according to commitments upon WTO accession, there remain sectors that are restricted for foreign investors. Some sectors require foreign involvement be in the form of joint ventures with local partners, while ownership caps are placed in other industries. In the cases where a total ban remains, foreign companies can enter collaboration with Chinese enterprises for the use of their resources and know-how. China has become the world's manufacturing centre. Outsourcing production to Chinese manufacturers is no longer a novelty. Many foreign enterprises are outsourcing parts of their operations to Chinese companies so that they can focus on key business areas.
