“FIBRINOLYTIC CAPACITY” IN HEALTHY VOLUNTEERS AT DIFFERENT AGES AS STUDIED BY STANDARDIZED VENOUS OCCLUSION OF ARMS AND LEGS

Abstract The local fibrinolytic response to standardized venous occlusion of arms and legs has been studied in 345 healthy volunteers of different ages (children, adults (18–50) and old people (above 65)). The fibrinolytic activity of resuspended euglobulin precipitate was measured on unheated fibrin plates. The fibrinolytic response to venous occlusion of the arms increased significantly (p < 0.001) with age. In the aged the response was significantly (p < 0.001) lower in men than in women. In the legs the fibrinolytic response did not vary significantly with age below 50. The response was significantly lower in persons above 65 than in those below this age. The ratio between the response of the arm and that of the leg increased strongly with age. The results suggest that the predisposition of the legs to thrombosis and arteriosclerosis increases with age.
