Development of a Miniaturized <inline-formula> <tex-math notation="LaTeX">$W$ </tex-math> </inline-formula>-Band Spatial Harmonic Magnetron

Spatial harmonic magnetrons (SHMs) are effective microwave oscillation sources in short millimeter and terahertz regions. This paper presents the development of a miniaturized W-band SHM, which features small size, lightweight, high power, and high reliability. In the design of this SHM, the first backward spatial harmonic wave of π/2 -1 mode was used for beam-wave interaction. Then particle-in-cell code was employed to analyze its characteristics, including dispersion, mode separation, field distribution, and electron spokes. Based on the simulation results, a prototype of the miniaturized W-band SHM was fabricated. The test data showed the device was able to deliver an output power of ~2.0 kW. Note that this magnetron has a dimension of only 36 mm x 36 mm x 80 mm and a weight of less than 270 g with magnets.
