Objective To reveal the diversity and antibacterial activity of fungi isolated from sponges and corals in the South China Sea.Methods 9kinds of fungal media were used to isolate and purify the fungi from sponges and corals. The fungi were identified through fungi 18 SrDNA by BLAST tool.Phylogenetic tree was conducted by MEGA 5.2.Antibacterial activity was tested using standard disk diffusion. Results A total of 106 fungi was isolated from six sponge species and three coral species.A total of 41 independent isolates, which belonged to 26 genera within 11 orders of Ascomycota and 4orders of Basidiomycota, was identified by sequences analysis. The fungi from Ascomycota were the most dominant, occupying 93.4%of the fungal isolates, while the rest belonged to Basidiomycota. The antibacterial activity test indicated that several fungi were active against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Conclusion The results showed high diversity and antibacterial activities of fungi derived from sponges and corals, which laid the basis for the further utilization of fungi associated with sponges and corals for marine drugs development.
