The viewpoints are different among the past dynasties about the etiology and pathogenesis of insane disease for TCM.The theory of phlegm confusing heart from Jin and Yuan dynasty,and being current in Ming and Qing dynasty.Following the development of the theory brain controlling mind,the TCM on Qing dynasty has regarded the brain as the attacking position of insane disease,but that was not the main understanding.The following doctors on HUI-TONG faction differentiated and analysed the relationship between the brain and the five internal organs,and stated the pathogenesis of phlegm leading to insane disease,but these did not revolutionise the theory of heart controlling mind.The modern lunacy disease science of TCM takes a new look at the heart and brain,realizing that the important pathogenesis of insane disease is the phlegm influencing brain function.Then there was a new conclusion about the attacking position and pathogenesis of insane disease.Through the transform from the phlegm confusing heart theory to the phlegm stagnating brain theory,we can understand the viscera relativity that phlegm leading to insane disease.This abundants the lunacy disease science tremendously,and provides the theoretical basis for treating schizophrenosis from phlegm.
