Hongjianlao Lake is the biggest desert freshwater lake in China; it also is the biggest propagation and habitat of Larus relictus in the world. The change of water surface area of the lake plays an important role in protecting environment. After collecting data through interpreting Landsat TM and China and Brazil Earth Resource Satellite images and reading foregone papers, the change of water surface area of Hongjiannao Lake has been simulated with a conic, and the reason of the lake rapidly shrinking has been analyzed. The analyses show that the water surface area of Hongjiannao Lake has been shrinking and the water level has been falling quickly since the nineties of the twentieth century. It is resulted from the synthetically action of climate change and contrived effects, such as,irrigation, environment restructure, coal mine exploitation and water resource utilization. Intercepting upriver stream is the main cause.
