Characteristics and hazard assessment of debris flow in Shenjia Gully of Luding County,Sichuan Province

A debris flow broke out on July 14,2006 in Shenjia Gully of Luding County.Its average velocity was 6.3m/s.This debris flow caused serious loss of property,because it was located in the county seat.Its main characteristics were small drainage area,steep brae,short gully and the big grade of gully.Shenjia Gully was classed as the moderate hazardous catchment.This paper made a quantitative research on the hazard degree and the maximal dangerous boundary of the debris of low in Shenjia Gully.The main countermeasures against debris flow were planting trees,holding back loose materials and improving the gully's ability of preventing debris flow.
