A Lacanian Reading of Holden 's Psychological Dilemma

Equipped with Lacan 's theory about the three registers of the human psyche,this paper focuses on the analysis of Holden 's mental development.First,in the Imaginary Order Holden forms an idealized mirror image to be a catcher in the rye.Then confronted with the adult world,he feels strong threats elicited by the Name-of-the-Father to his Ideal ego and in a symbolic sense he is castrated.Afterwards,wandering between the Imaginary and the Symbolic,Holden unconsciously longs for the Real to regain the original completeness.
