A STUDY ON THE BIOLOGY AND CONTROL OF THE POWDER-POST BEETLE DINODERUS JAPONICUS LESNE

The powder-poet beetle Dinoderus japonicus Lesne is one of the most important insect pests injurious to bamboo in Kiangsi Province.According to our observations in this province it has one complete generation a year.The adults together with some larvae pass over the winter within the infested bamboos.The beetles will sneak out from the hibernating quarters in the spring and bore into freshly cut bamboos to propagate.The female beetle lays 30 to 142 eggs during its whole life which may last for 200 days.The incubation period is about 60 days and the larval,prepupal and pupal stages usually take 100,3-5,and 10-15 days respectively.This pest can be controlled by treating the infested bamboos with high pressure steam (5 lbs.and 108℃for 10 minutes) or by soaking them in hot water.Chemical control will be effective by soaking the infested bamboos in Dipterex solution (1:300 to 1:1000) or Tamaron emulsions (1:2000 to 1:3300) for 8 hours.In the bamboo stores the infested bamboos must be cleared out in the winter to eliminate the contamination in the next spring.
