Accuracy of Metal Oxide Surge Arrester Model Under Steep-front Waves

This paper presents three electrical models of Metal Oxide Surge Arrester(MOA) concerning the dynamic characteristics of MOA under steep front waves in order to find a computation model for MOA under steep front waves.The model is derived from the model recommended by IEEE W.G.3.4.11,which is named as IEEE model.Parameter definition of IEEE recommended model,PINCETI model and the analysis on the accuracy of the two models are discussed in detail .The present model could not be applied to the calculation of MOA when the rise time of the current wave is less than 8 μs..The application of IEEE recommended model and PINCETI model are introduced by the use of an specific example.Then the simulation results and the experimental data have been compared.All of the test results obtained by the manufactures are compared with the computation results of the two models.Conclusion is drawn that both the IEEE recommended model and PINCETI model present good accuracy.The main innovation introduced by the paper lays in the possibility to define an approximate dynamic model even if data about residual voltage for steep front pulse are not defined in the manufacture's data sheet.Both models can predict the operation of the metal oxide arrester in the system.Because the parameter definition of PINCETI model which does not require iterative correction is much convenient than IEEE model,and the PINCETI model is much suitable for application,PINCETI model has been recommended for computation.
