High water permeability of proximal tubules and erythrocytes is due to membrane proteins serving specifically as water channels. Such conclusions stem from volume flow measurements in plasma membrane vesicles and mRNA expression studies in Xenopus oocxytes. Evidence is now emerging that this water channel is a 28-kDa protein which belongs to an ancient channel familiy.
