Transposition of the Lac Region of E. coli

It has recently become possible to isolate strains of Escherichia coli in which certain genes are transposed to new locations on the bacterial chromosome (Cuzin and Jacob, 1964; Scaife and Pekhov, 1964). Such strains are of particular interest because, in certain cases, transposition of genes allows new experimental approaches to the study of gene function. These approaches may not be possible with the genes at their normal chromosomal location.
