Sex attraction in Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) was demonstrated in the field. A synthetic sex attractant of the borer, cis-tetradecenyl acetate (cis-ll-tda), was discovered. Field traps baited with 14 μg cis-11-tda formulated in olive oil were as competitive for wild borer males as traps baited with 4 virgin female moths. However, sex attractant analogues trans-ll-tetradecenyl acetate and 11-tetradecynyl acetate are potent inhibitors of the borer's mate-finding ability.
