SummaryMast cell granules inhibited a heparin activated lipase extracted from rat adipose tissue. Purified rat heparin extracted from granules activated the lipase. Since DFP reversed the inhibition by both chymotrypsin and mast cell granules, it was concluded that granule-bound, mast cell chymase was responsible for the inhibition of lipase activity by mast cell granules. The stability of the chymase-heparin complex in extracellular and intravascular compartments makes it unlikely that mast cell heparin modulates lipase activity in tissue or plasma.
