Following infection of E. coli with the RNA- containing bacteriophage f2 several thousand pro- geny bacteriophage are synthesized. This requires the production of RNA replicas of the parental RNA by a mechanism apparently independent of bacterial DNA (Cooper and Zinder, 1962).
