Addition, Decomposition and Accumulation of Organic Matter in Forests

Organic matter annually added to the soil will be submitted to a process of decomposition. The added quantity and the rate of decomposition will in the end lead to a smaller or larger accumulation of humoid compounds. It is difficult to give a quantitative gravimetric picture of this phenomenon, because of the simultaneous processes of mineralization and of accumulation. However, the following details can be more or less accurately measured:
