The hardiness of Scaphiopus larvae is well known, but it has not been reported that some can survive completely out of water on wet mud. A single larva of Scaphiopus bombifrons was observed in Pool 12, Tillman Co., Oklahoma, to survive almost 20 hrs completely out of water. Other larvae were observed to orient in a supine position with their mouths upward. A dry mud cover formed over them as the pool dried; the dry mud cover appeared to serve as a seal to additional moisture escaping and provided that additional time for the larvae to metamorphose.
