A Role for recF in Repair of UV Damage to DNA

Mutations interfering with genetic recombination in Escherichia coli also interfere with repair of UV-irradiation damage in DNA. Two reasons for this have been discovered. First, some repair is accomplished by recombination (Rupp et al. 1971), and second, induction of repair potential presumably by the induction of repair enzymes seems to require the wild-type function of proteins involved in recombination (Witkin 1976; Clark and Volkert 1978). The most outstanding example of the association between UV stimulation of protein synthesis and recombination is embodied in the model of the induction of protein X, now identified as the product of the recA gene (Emmerson and West 1977; Gudas and Mount 1977; McEntee 1977). The model involves at least two activities for the recA protein: (1) a DNA-binding activity, and (2) a protease activity.
