Middle East set to enhance position in petrochemicals

The petrochemical industry is gearing up to absorb some 1.6 million metric tons per year of ethylene capacity due to come onstream in the Middle East this year. And nearly that same amount is scheduled to start up in the region by the end of 2002. Given that prospect, petrochemical producers in other parts of the world need to understand the ramifications of Middle Eastern expansion on the industry's dynamics. Consequently, a new report from securities analysts at Salomon Smith Barney (SSB), part of New York City-based Citigroup, aims to provide that understanding to chemical producers, particularly in the U.S. and Europe. According to the report's authors—analysts P. J. Juvekar, based in New York City, and Peter Blair, in London—petrochemicals are seen by Middle Eastern interests as an attractive business due to the region's huge feedstock advantage and proximity to Asian markets.
