It is just ten years since the first report of genetic recombination i Escherichia coli K-12 was made to this Symposium by Lederberg and Tatum. Since then a great deal of work has been devoted to study of the genetics of recombination but, in general, such studies have tended to stress the complexity of the genetic process by bringing to light the anomalies inherent in it rather than to elucidate its mechanism.
