The general distribution and abundance of potentially nitrogen-fixing blue-green algae in Swedish soils of different types have been reported earlier (Granhall and Henriksson 1969). These algae were present in almost half of the examined soils and were frequent or abundant in one third of the soils. The algae were considered to be potential nitrogen fixers because of their possession of heterocysts. Stewart et al. (1969) have shown that the heterocysts most probably are the sites of nitrogenase activity and are present only in algae that fix nitrogen. Such algae were isolated in unialgal cultures from soils and tested for nitrogenase activity, by the acetylene reduction technique devised by Stewart et al. (1967).
