There exists a commensalism between the sulfate-reducing bacterium Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and other heterotrophic bacteria. Namely, the mixed cultures of D. desulfuricans and other heterotrophic bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Paracolobactrum aerogenoides or Proteus morganii, can reduce sulfate to sulfide in the presence of various organic compounds such as glucose, citrate, glycerol or glutamate, which are not utilized by the pure culture of D. desulfuricans. As for such a commensalism, two other interesting facts became evident from the mixed culture experiments. Namely, although the pure culture of D. desulfuricans requires both the addition of growth factor and regulation of the redox potential of the culture media, this bacterium in mixed cultures requires none of these treatments.
