Alcohol abuse may become a primary illness, alcoholism, or a complication of other psychiatric processes, such as sociopathy. It is necessary to distinguish between the alcoholic who engages in a limited sphere of antisocial acts and the sociopath who abuses alcohol as part of his antisocial behavior, because the process and prognosis of these different varieties of alcoholism may be distinct.
