This chapter outlines the basic genetic and statistical principle of quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping. Interval mapping and its extensions which are commonly used are described. An example in rice is used to illustrate the procedure of QTL mapping. Genetic mapping holds a great promise to understand the genetic architecture of quantitative traits important to agriculture.
