Investigation of the Use of Oxidative and Biological Pretreatments to Reduce Flux Loss in Microfiltration Membranes

Although membrane technology is widely used in the water industry, membrane fouling remains an important limitation to permeate flux and membrane life. In this study the effect of UV and VUV photooxidation, and biological treatment, on the flux of river water through a hydrophobic microfiltration membrane was investigated. Under the conditions employed, biological treatment of the river water over 7 days had no effect on flux decline. The flux loss was less for samples treated using VUV radiation, with progressively better results obtained for samples treated with increasingly higher doses. In contrast, UV treatment did not improve permeate flux, with low doses actually increasing flux decline. UV and VUV photooxidation followed by biological treatment improved the permeate flux compared with UV- and VUVtreatment alone.
