Factors Involved in the Initiation of Sperm Motility

The initiation of motility in epididymal spermatozoa was examined using samples obtained by in vivo micropuncture of the rat cauda epididymidis. Neither reduced osmolality to iso-osmotic conditions nor dilution of spermatozoa was essential to the initiation of sperm motility. The addition of ionic solutions to cauda epididymal samples was required for the activation of sperm cells. The ionic requirement was nonspecific.
