Editor's Note: This lecture was given by Dr. Virchow at the Pathological Institute of the University of Berlin in 1858. Virchow's view that atheroma was the result of chronic inflammatory disease of the intima, aided by a “blood dyscrasia,” persisted throughout the nineteenth century and is not inconsistent with current views of the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.
