The year 1992 represents a turning point in genetic analysis. We are 40 years away from the brilliant deductions of Jim Watson and Francis Crick which resolved the structure of the DNA molecule, the basis of all inherited information; four decades which have seen a constantly increasing interest in the human genome. Although high-resolution genetic maps are within reach and a large panel of highly informative genetic markers are now available, physical maps remain incomplete. To fill this gap, we have recently introduced a robust whole-genome mapping approach. The physical maps which we are generating will not only allow rapid identification of cloned chromosomal fragments, but will also be used to fill in the last holes remaining in the genetic map.
