Effective dose (E) was introduced by the International Commission of Radiological Protection (ICRP) to provide a summation of radiation doses to tissues and organs for radiological protection. For a non-uniform irradiation, E is designed to provide an estimate of th corresponding uniform whole-body dose that would result in the same stochastic detriment. E, which has the same units as equivalent dose, is obtained by summing individual organ equivalent doses (HT) multiplied by the corresponding tissue weighting factors. ... ... Of course diagnostic radiology deals almost exclusively with non-uniform radiation exposures. Is the concept of E useful in diagnostic radiology? Does it provide a quick but useful estimate of the overall detriment of a non-uniform low dose? Or is it confusing and more trouble than it is worth?
