The site of mitotic activity in rat and human oral epithelium

abstract – The location of cell division was studied in oral epithelium of 24 rats aged 2, G and 25 months and in 10 biopsies of human gingiva. Half of the animals received injections of colchicine in the morning and the other half in the evening. The time interval between injection and sacrifice was 3½ h. Serial sections of the rat gingiva, palate and tongue, and of the human gingival biopsies, were prepared. Almost all mitoses which in individual sections appeared to be located superficial to the 2 deepest cell layers of the epithelium were shown to be situated next to the basement membrane when adjacent sections were superimposed. Wax models (× 300) of the rat specimens designed to study the distribution of the mitotic cells showed that cell division was restricted to the cell layers adjacent to the basement membrane and that dividing cells tended to occur in clusters.
