The World-Wide Web (WWW), a global networked information system based on hypertext (HTML), has become extremely popular since it became available in 1992. There is a large amount of information on the World Wide Web. So far this information has primarily been used by people who connect to the web via a traditional graphical user interface (GUI) browser. Recent advances in Chinese speech recognition, and speech synthesis technologies have made it possible to use Chinese spoken-language access to the WWW. In order to improve the ease of access to the information available on the WWW, as well as to give increased exposure to spoken language systems, we developed a Chinese spoken language web browser (CSLWB), a spoken language extension to the graphical user interface of the World-Wide Web browser.
