Maternal and child health in Bolivia : report on the in-depth DHS survey in Bolivia, 1989

As part of the Demographic and Health Surveys program (DHS) the Bolivian In-Depth Survey conducted in February-July 1989 involved 7923 women aged 15-49 and their children under 5. The standard DHS questionnaires wee used with additional modules. Bolivias estimated population of 6.4 million live in 3 distinct regions the Altiplano with 49% Valle with 28% and Lianos with 23% of the population. Data are reported by region or by urban/rural residence mothers education fathers occupation media exposure or language. Child mortality was highest in the Valle and notably with less maternal education or media exposure. Average child mortality was 141.8/1000; infant mortality 85.8 and neonatal 41.0. Infant mortality was primarily due to diarrhea and respiratory infection. Each child had mean 5.8 episodes or 32 days of diarrhea per year. 70% of mothers knew of ORS packets and 43% had used them. Height and weight were recorded for 2536 children aged 3-36 months revealing 13% underweight and 38% stunted worse in children of higher birth order and older mothers Indian language- speaking mothers and those with no education or low socioeconomic status. 96% of infants were breastfed the only data in the survey without differentials by mothers education language and socioeconomic status. Information on immunization was primarily based on recall since only 19% of children had cards.
