Summary In the microflora of the rat and hamster stomach anaerobic and Gram-positive microorganisms predominate. In the contents of the forestomach of both animal species there are larger amounts of cultivable microorganisms than in the glandular stomach. In the rat the difference is significant for resident groups i. e. aerobic and anaerobic lactobacilli and total anaerobes. Yeasts, which represent an exception, predominate in the glandular stomach. The spore-formers and coliforms, originating most probably from pellets and from faeces respectively, were found irregularly and can be designated as transient groups. Streptococci occupy an intermediate position between the resident and transient groups. In the hamster the numbers for all microorganism groups detected, with the exception of coliforms, were significantly greater in the forestomach than in the glandular stomach. In both animal species the pH of the stomach contents is significantly higher in the forestomach than in the glandular stomach. The mean differences are 1.7 in the rat and 2.7 in the hamster.
