Abstract— A clone having a plating efficiency of about 60–70 per cent has been isolated from the A8 Xenopus laevis tissue culture cell line. We have used it to test for photoreactivation of ultraviolet induced loss of colony‐forming ability. Photoreactivation produces a dramatic increase in survival. Time and temperature dependence experiments suggest that this is a true enzymatic process. Photoreactivation affects mainly the extrapolation number of the survival curves, rather than their slope. The cells lack a adein‐sensitive dark repair mechanism and photoreactivation is caffein‐independent. Parallel gamma‐ray experiments showed no photoreactivation, and cells were remarkably resistant to gamma‐ray killing, In marked contrast to their ultraviolet sensitivity.
