SUMMARY A method is described for the direct measurement of 14C2H4 in toluene scintillator and for the measurement of toluene‐soluble 14C accumulated in tissue during 14C2H4 (0.7–1.0 μ1/l) treatment. Using these methods the partition coefficient for ethylene between air and plant tissues was estimated. Tissues from a substantial proportion of 36 species tested gave partition coefficients significantly higher than that for water (0.11) indicating either the sequestration of 14C2H4 or the accumulation of toluene‐soluble metabolites. Steam‐killed tissue gave partition coefficients similar to that of water.
