N the investigation of etiological factors in I cancer, the search for precancerous ( onditions and their causes seems of particular importance.Such study has both academic interest, in that it may elucidate the pathogenesis of canccr, and practical significance, in that it may point to preventive measures.T h e present study concerns types of cancer that occur with greater frequency among Swedish women than among women in most other countries.In thc United States and in continental Europe most cancers of the upper alimentary and respiratory tracts are significantly more common in men than in women.Swedish statistics show cancers of some of these sites, particularly those involving the lower hypopharynx, to he more common in women.T h e primary purpose of this investigation was to ascertain the reason for this marked difference between the American and the Swedish experience.In 1952, this study was initiated in co-operation with Hugo Ahlbom, Prolessor of Radiology and Head of the Radiumhemmet in Stockholm, who had long been interested in possible reasons for the relatively high rate of these cancers among Swedish women.lAhlbom played a foremost role in the early days of this investigation.His death in the fall of 1952 was not only a scientific loss but to us a personal loss.Subsequent data have shown that much
