Effect of a Professional Tooth Cleaning Program on Interdentally Localized Streptococcus mutans

The effect of a professionally performed tooth cleaning program on Streptococcus mutans in interproximal sites was studied. 35 children participated. In study 1, the program was performed four times during a period of 8 days in two of the four quadrants (split-mouth study). In study 2, all teeth and also the tongue were included. S. mutans samples were obtained from each interproximal site and from the tongue. The level of S. mutans colonization was reduced but the effect was transient. The recovery to approximate baseline levels was faster in interproximals with carious or filled surfaces. S. mutans numbers in saliva were reduced.
