Its favorable pharmacokinetic properties allow it to be administered at 8-hour intervals (2), and unlike other cephalosporins, it reaches the cerebrospinal fluid in therapeutic concentrations (3). However, its major attraction is its effectiveness in vitro against many bacterial pathogens. It is active against the usual pathogenic gram-positive cocci (streptococci, pneumococci, staphylococci) as well as the Enterobacteriaceae (1, 4). Moreover, it is active in vitro against anaerobes (includingBacteroides fragilis) as well asHaemophilus influenzae(including ampicillin-resistant strains) andPseudomonas aeruginosa(4-6).
