THE HISTOLOGY of peripheral nerve tumors ("neurofibromas") has been described in detail using light microscopy with the aid of different stains and impregnation techniques. Such studies generally have been oriented towards determination of the origin of the predominant cellular component and the characteristics of the tumor stroma. Only a few histopathologists1mention mesodermal elements other than the endoneurial cell which, it has been suggested, is constantly present in these tumors. Mesodermal elements, other than endoneurial cells, were identified as histiocytes by Rio-Hortega1and have been found to contain granules which might be interpreted as phagocytosed material.2Electron microscopically these cells display numerous organized cytoplasmic granules but no evidence of ingested debris.
