Schröder, J., Soveri, T., Suomalainen, H. A., Lindberg, L.-A. and van der Loo, W. 1987. Hybrids between Lepus timidus and Lepus europaeus are rare although fertile. —Hereditas 107 185–189. Lund, Sweden. ISSN 0018–0661. Received January 28, 1987 The morphology, testis histology, mitosis, meiosis and genetically determined immunoglobulin markers were studied in an artificially bred hybrid male of Lepus timidus and Lepus europaeus. The overall appearance of the hybrid hare resembled that of Lepus timidus, but it had some morphological features of Lepics europaeus as well. The karyotype was identical with that of both parental species, and the testes showed normal spermatogenetic activity, with normal meiotic divisions. The serum from this hare reacted with an anti-serum specific for a marker of Lepus europaeus immunoglobulins. A field study 01 42 hares (36 Lepus timidus, 6 Lepus europaeus) shot in various parts of Finland showed no evidence of hybrid formation in the wild, based both on morphological features, and studies of serum immunoglobulins.
